BBN Awards 2005

by British Boxing
Jan 5th 2006
The votes are in from BBN's team of writers and have been counted and we can reveal the winners of the BBN Awards for 2005.

Boxer of the Year

1. Ricky Hatton
2. Clinton Woods
3. Michael Hunter

Almost an unanimous decision as Hatton gets votes from almost everyone.

Fight of the Year

1. Michael Jennings vs. Bradley Pryce
2. Michael Hunter vs. Esham Pickering
3. Ricky Hatton vs. Kostya Tszyu

The closest category, but in the end Jennings/Pryce just pips Hunter/Pickering.

Overseas Boxer of the Year

1. Jackson Asiku
2. Joshua Okine
3. Victor Polo

Another close one, between Asiku who is now based in Britain and Joshua Okine who meets Ali Nuumbembe in February.

Upset of the Year

1. Ricky Burns vs. Graham Earl
2. Steve Conway vs. Mihaly Kotai
3. Ernie Smith vs. George Hillyard

Ricky Burns' win over British champion Graham Earl beats off competition from Steve Conways excellent win over Mihaly Kotai in early December.

Youngster of the Year

1. Amir Khan
2. John Murray
3. Kevin Mitchell

I was surprised at this one, but Amir Khan gets most people's votes, although both Murray and Mitchell have fought and beaten far better opponents.

Services to Boxing

1. Peter Buckley

Honorable mentions go to Ernie Smith, Mick Williamson, Ernie Draper, Frank Warren and Mary Powell (LEBA)

Runaway winner in this category was Peter Buckley for his services to the sport, as at the end of December he had 256 fights to his name and is a deserved winner.

Promoter of the Year

1. Sports Network
2. Fight Academy
3= Hennessy Sports
3= Matchroom Sports

In his twenty-fifth year as a promoter Frank Warren at the helm of Sports Network easily win this award.

The Years memorable moment.

Kostya Tszyu staying on his stool at the end of the eleventh round.

Most decided that the sight of Tszyu not coming out for the final round was their most memorable moment. Honorable mention goes to a memorable moment in the Francis Jones and Ernie Smith fight.
