Shanee takes another step towards 'the Bitch'

by Kevin Taylor
Feb 26th 2006
Derek Williams in association with Ampro today put on a fight-fest at the Goresebrook Ice Rink, sorry Sports centre with no less than eleven fights taking place on Sunday.

Top of the bill was Colchester's Shanee Martin, who is looking for a Commonwealth title shot against fellow Brit Cathy 'The Bitch' Brown, who took on the German Maya Frenzel who was rated number three in Europe by the WEBF.

The unbeaten Martin bossed the fight from the start even though her opponent looked in a different weight class despite only being a pound heavier and hit the German with some hurtful punches to the body as well as finding her chin on numerous occasions with her accurate uppercuts.

Frenzel had only one stoppage loss to her name and that was in a WIBF-GBU title fight back in 2003 when she was stopped in the tenth and last round but Martin made short work of her and the German was breathing heavily as early as the third round after being completely dominated in the second.

Referee Marcus McDonnell seemed poised to jump in at various times in the second and fourth rounds but to her credit Frenzel kept throwing leather back at the just the right times but McDonnell decided he had seen enough in the fifth after a flurry of unanswered punches and Martin and her vovacious crowd celebrated her fifth win.

For Frenzel it was the end of a bad weekend as her boyfried Turgay Urzan was outpointed by Takaloo at the Excel show the night before.

Thornton Heath's newest professional Angel McKenzie who has made her way to the UK via Russia came to the ring with a fur hat, sunglasses and a belt flashing the name Angel up in LED's (The fur hat was probably the only good part of the atire bearing in mind how cold it was in the arena).

Good things have been said about her but she looked laboured and unfit as she outpointed her eighteen year Slovakian opponent over four rounds. At the end of the fight Angel shouted "I Love you all" to the crowd. But this was Women's boxing at it's worst.

The night got off to a bad start for Greg Barton who was making his professional debut, he had to get off the floor in the early stages of the fight but after taking a couple more hooks was stopped after just 1:41 of the first round by fellow debutant Leon Owen of Mountain Ash. Leon is Damien Owen's brother.

For the house fighters things got worse when James Paisley was stopped in the third round of scheduled six-twos due to a bad cut over his left eye.

Referee McDonnell made it clear to everyone that is was his own headbutt that did the damage but bizarrely Paisley was also cut on the back of his head. Both cuts needed stitches. For Paisley's opponent Imad Khamis it is was his first win in six fights while Paisley drops to 5-13.

J.J Oujederie did enough to beat Worksop's Simeon Cover over four rounds. Cover started well but didn't do enough work against Oujederie who was cheered on by brother O.J. Abrahams from ringside and ended up dropping the decision 39-37 on referee McDonnell's card. Oujederie is now unbeaten in five after losing his first three pro fights.

Turkish born Gorkan Kazaz now based in Walthamstow and boxing out of the TKO gym seemed a tad fortunate to get a draw against the promising Manoo Salari.

Kazaz had his normal quick start but Salari did enough for me in the other three rounds to win the fight and he was disappointed at the end when referee Davies adjudged the contest to be a draw.

Crowd favourite Freddie Luke put on a good performance to outpoint Swansea's Chris Brophy over four rounds, the switch hitting Luke was just to quick and nimble for the Welshman and won 40-37 on referee Davies' card.

Nathan Graham made it five wins out of five when he outpointed the tough Duncan Cottier over four rounds. Rated highly by promoter Derek Williams, Graham picked his punches well and displayed good movement and quick hands.

For Dean 'Dino' Marcantonio it was also to be a debut to forget as he was stopped at the end of the third round by Tooting's Dave Wakefield in a cracking fight. Wakefield never let the debutant find his feet and landed with some crunching blows that forced referee McDonnell to stop the contest just as the bell rang to end the third round.

Rocky Dean and Vinesh Rungea put on the fight of the night in a mini-classic with both happy to stand toe-to-toe and exchange shots. The flamboyant Mauritian having only his third pro fight landed some good shots but his defence was almost non-existant and Thetford's Dean also found the target with some big hooks to body and head.

Referee Davies scored it 58-57 to Dean who put the disappointment of a stoppage loss in Ukraine for the WBF Intercontinental belt behind him.

Ovill McKenzie despite giving away over two stones to veteren Tony Booth had him down twice and holding on to finish the four rounds with his normal showboating and the now familar Boothy Ali Shuffle.

McKenzie, who is looking to get a shot at Peter Oboh's Commonwealth title even found the time to laugh at Booth's antic when the 142 fight veteren unleashed two big lefts in the last and swarmed all over him.

Booth who's career spans nearly sixteen years has said he will have just a couple more including a home fight in Hull before hanging up his gloves.

Tonight he lost 40-35 on referee McDonnell's card but once again gave the crowd something to laugh about with his showboating.

A decent crowd attended despite it being the third show in London in three days and overall the night's fights were well worth the attendance money for the public although the night did seem to drag on with the eleven fight card.
