Johanneson-Fehintola news; Leeds card, Saturday

by Paul Concannon
Sep 23rd 2006

Leeds promoter Rick Manners has today informed us that Carl Johanneson's voluntary British super-featherweight title defence against Bradford's Femi Fehintola, a bout he describes as, ‘One of Yorkshire's hottest match-ups' is almost made.

The match has been agreed by all parties involved and with the venue being secured. The British Boxing Board of Control has sanctioned this contest to happen in November 2006. The final part of the equation is now the relevant signatures on the contract.

The bout marks a leap forward in the often complex politics of boxing, with the teaming up of three major forces in UK boxing; Dennis Hobson, who heads Sheffield's Fight Academy, Frank Maloney from London's Fight Factory and finally the Manners-run Bauer Events, based in Leeds.

“This contest is giving what the Yorkshire fighting fans want - a super fight. This fight could have only happened with all promoters losing their egos and thus allowing it to happen.”

Rick feels confident that the tide is turning in a sport often criticised for political shenanigans and disappointing mismatches. “It is going to be a new trend, which will make super domestic fights happen in the UK. The show is a collaboration of three great promoters, three great matchmakers; all these people are working together to produce what the public want, great fights.

“The show has got to be successful with so much input at stake. There is a lot of pride and a lot of good faith for all involved here.”

For further information call Rick Manners 0113 243 6017, Frank Maloney 0208 691 4165 or Fight Academy 0114 256 0555.

In other West Yorkshire news, Leeds fighter Danny Wallace returns to the ring on September 30th in Leeds in a bid to kick-start his career and seeks his opportunity of a British Title challenge under the tuition of new trainer Martin Williams.

Dewsbury's super-featherweight Gary Sykes, the man dubbed by Bauer Events as, ‘Yorkshire's Oscar De La Hoya' will step up to six three-minute rounds in a bid to get closer to contention in the new season. The charismatic Sykes revealed, “I can't wait to get back into the ring and show Yorkshire and the world how good I am and claim my place with the very best in the sport.”

Manners' solid performer Danny ‘The Hammer' Wright returns, looking to grind his way into contention for a title in a super-middleweight bout against an opponent to be confirmed.

The show also includes debuts for Phil ‘China' Clarke, Phil Callaghan and Paul Cannon.

The event also features appearances from Yorkshire champions Junior Witter the WBC light-welterweight champion and Carl Johanneson, the British super-featherweight champion, who will be available for autographs and picture opportunities. For tickets call or text 07976 257119.
