England's 2008 Olympic hopeful Joe Murray – brother of professional boxer John – continued his impressive international form today as he scored a gold medal in the VII Annual Prizes of Brothers Klitschko tournament in Kiev, Ukraine.
Joe is forging a name for himself on the overseas amateur circuit. This gold win – against a southpaw from Uzbekistan – saw Joe beat a boxer from the Ukraine, a boxer from Nigeria and a boxer from Guinea on route to the final.
BBN understands that Joe kept his composure abroad to secure a 14-9 victory and net the top prize.
His opponent in the final was Tulashboy Daniyarov who reached the quarter-finals in the Athens Olympics and would have given Joe a chance to see the heights he is shooting for ahead of the games in Beijing next year.
Certainly the mixture of styles faced in this tournament, as well as the invaluable experience annexed to his skills by boxing away from home, will help Joe has he continues his 2007 learning curve.
