Hamed car crash victim arrested by Ian McNeilly May 29th 2007

The man whose life was torn apart by the recklessness of former world featherweight champion, Naseem Hamed, has been arrested on a charge of dangerous driving after a complaint from the former boxer's wife. Decorator Anthony Burgin, 40, was released on bail by police after Eleasha Hamed accused Mr Burgin of deliberately steering his car into the path of her vehicle.  Mrs Hamed, 33, is understood to have accused Mr Burgin of emerging from a side road into the path of her 4x4 and she almost hit him side-on. The alleged incident is said to have happened near the Hamed family home - not far from where the former boxing champion smashed his high powered sports car head on into the Burgins' Volkswagen, smashing almost every major bone in Mr Burgin's body and seriously injuring his wife, Claire, two years ago this month.  He was trying to impress a business associate.  Hamed was travelling at 90mph over the brow of a hill on the wrong side of the road.  He also left the scene of the accident.  Hamed was sentenced to 15 months but, as is usually the case, served far less time.  His family and friends collected him from jail in a distasteful, celebratory mood. Mr Burgin, who has not worked since his personal tragedy, is seeking compensation from the multi-millionaire. Mr Burgin's solicitor, Jane Wright of the Sheffield firm Irwin Mitchell, said: "Anthony Burgin denies any wrongdoing and is happy to help the police with their inquiries. He was interviewed following complaints made against him by the Hamed family."
