Double Title tilt on Ice

by Tom Walker
Aug 10th 2007
Kevin Anderson and Steve McGuire are topping the bill on the joint Tommy Gilmour/Barry Hearn promotion in the atmospheric, yet bitterly cold underneath, Ice Rink in Kirkcaldy on September the 14th.

Kevin Anderson has a voluntary defence of his British welterweight title against Francis “Frannie” Jones of Darlington and Steve McGuire has Nathan King from Wales, as his opponent for the vacant Celtic super middleweight strap. Supporting these titles shots will be South Queensferry's unbeaten featherweight Paul Appleby, Denbeath's welterweight Willie Bilan and Dunfermline super middleweight Gordon Brennan.

Promoter Tommy Gilmour, with ever an open eye for publicity for his boxers, has tried to invite the Prime Minister (and local M.P.), Gordon Brown to the proceedings. Self-confessed Raith Rovers F.C. fan, Brown may well wish to swap the white heat of parliamentary debate for the altogether cooler temperature of the Ice Rink, but I somehow doubt it! Nonetheless, you have to applaud his attempt to get the political supremo into the arena, if it pays off it will be a first, at least up here.

Having stopped his last 4 opponents early, Jones will be a handful for Anderson, and having seen him in action against Craig Dickson in Clydebank last November, he is a fast and slick operator. However, Andersons should have too much in his armoury for the Darlington boxer, especially since he (Anderson) has invested in his future by spending time training with Bob Shannon in Manchester, which has seen him refocus on the sport, as amply demonstrated by his victory over Eamonn Magee in his first title defence.

Nathan King and Steve McGuire are renewing amateur experiences as they have a victory each over each other in the vest and head guard regime! I fancy though that McGuire should have too much for King so far as this bout is concerned, with his 10 wins (4 early) from 11 bouts as opposed to King's 12 wins (1 early) from 21 bouts.
