Scott Evans ready for pro bow

by Daniel Mole
Oct 20th 2007

Scott Evans is ready to fly the flag for his gym as he becomes the first boxer from Halesowen Amateur Boxing Club to turn pro.

The 19-year-old light-welterweight kicks off his professional career on the undercard of Darren McDermott's clash with Kai Kauramaki at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall this coming Thursday evening.

At the time of writing, Evans' opponent has yet to be announced by First Team Promotions but the teenager will certainly be in good company.

As well as ‘The Black Country Body Snatcher's' bout with Finland's Kuaramaki, the likes of former Midlands Area lightweight champion Tristan Davies, Stafford's unbeaten light-welterweight Rob Hunt and former Midlands Area and British Masters title challenger Conroy McIntosh will all be in action.

The Hagley-based fighter is thrilled to be part of such a line-up for his debut.

“I'm really excited,” said Evans, who works with his father running markets around the West Midlands.

“I think there are 12 fights on the bill now and there are some good fighters involved so I can't wait to be part of it.

“Ever since I started boxing I have wanted to be a professional and now I have got my chance.”

Something of a late starter, Evans took up boxing at the age of 16. However, after winning 19 of his 25 amateur contests, it soon became clear that he had the necessary skills to move into the professional ranks.

“I started late but from the minute I started fighting I loved it and I always wanted to turn professional,” he added. “It wasn't a family thing. My parents weren't into it but it was always something I was interested in.

“Now I've got the chance to make a go of it in the professional ranks and I can't wait to get into the ring.”
