Gold for Frankie Gavin

by Kevin Taylor
Nov 3rd 2007
Birmingham's Frankie Gavin became the first British boxer to ever win a gold medal at the World Championships tonight.

Fighting at lightweight (60kg) he beat Italian Domenico Valentino 18-10 in the final in Chicago.

Gavin who is a double ABA champion and won the Commonwealth gold medal in 2006, won every round by two points, the first 3-1 and the other three rounds all 5-3.

Frankie will now go to Beijing in August, as one of the favourites to win a medal, and will try to go one better than Amir Khan did in 2004.
