Enzo Maccarinelli successfully defended his WBO cruiserweight title for a third time with a relatively easy fourth-round knockout of Mohamed Azzaoui.
The New Zealand-based Algerian is the type of opponent that would have given Maccarinelli problems a couple of years ago but such is his technical improvement under the tutelage of Enzo Calzaghe, Azzaoui was dismantled in quick fashion.
After an even opening round which saw the Welshman on the canvas by way of a stumble, the writing on the wall was writ large in the second session. Azzaoui got through with a nice, conventional 1-2 whilst Maccarinelli missed with a huge, headhunting left hook. A left hook to the body from hard-hitting Macc the Crack had the Algerian visibly wincing.
That was all the encouragement Maccarinelli needed. The inevitable ending came in the fourth when another left hook to the body crumpled Azzaoui, who didn't seem in the mood to prolong his punishment, though he did get to his feet. Time, 0:58.
