Novice McIntosh gets veteran Phillips

by Tom Podmore
Nov 16th 2007

Bartley Green's Eddie McIntosh, in only his second professional outing, will take on reigning British Masters light-heavyweight champion Mark Phillips on Pugilist Promotions debut show at the Custard Factory on Sunday (November 18).

Hard-hitting McIntosh – a relative of the late Bert Gilroy – made a huge splash on his paid debut in September by flattening durable Doncaster-based light-heavyweight Nicky Taylor in two spectacular rounds at a packed Holiday Inn, Birmingham.

Now the ambitious Brummie takes on 56-fight St Clare's-based Phillips, 32, who procured the vacant British Masters twelve-stone-six title with a 96-95 ten-round decision over Jonjo Finnegan only three fights ago.

“It promises to be a tough fight,” admitted the Richie Woodhall-trained Second City puncher. “However, I know I will be the one who ends the fight with his hand raised.

“I got a feel for it [pro boxing] on my debut and hope to build on that, get some more wins and make my way up the domestic ladder.”

Ambitious Eddie sold 110 tickets at a £100 each on his pro debut. He is expected to bring another huge following with him to the Rojac Building in Digbeth.

Matchmaker and co-promoter Jon Pegg, a former pro, said: “It's a good scrap for Eddie. He is fighting someone who can let him get a few rounds under his belt and show him a few tricks. Phillips is a durable ten-round operator and should give him a decent little test.

“His fights will guarantee excitement and is definitely one to watch.”

Thirteen amateur fights will kick-off the show at one-thirty, with the professional action getting underway at five. ‘Sweet' D Mitchell, Thomas ‘The Natural' Costello and Tommy ‘The Gun' Owens all appear on the pro bill.

A limited amount of tickets are still available from promoters Jon Pegg on 07939-007588 or John Costello on 07949-812948.
