Gary McArthur has revealed that his purse for Saturday night's defence of his title will be spent not on himself, but on his mother! He'll use the money earned to add to the savings he's already made to repay his mother for her unflinching support.
McArthur said: "I began saving when I had my first fight at the Play Drome Clydebank last December and the purse from this bout will enable me to put the cash up to buy my mum's council house for her.
"If the worst came to the worst and the only thing I got from boxing was the chance to do this for my mum I would be more than happy. But I hope to secure many more pay days from boxing."
In these days of overpaid, egotistical football stars, some of whom are earning more in a week than most honest to goodness professional boxers do in a year, with this sort of humility and gratitude to his mother, you can be assured that he will reap his reward with more pay days in the future.
Take note please those of you who kick a ball in the Premiership for a living. Boxing has guys like this all over the UK, and they make better role models.
