Britishboxing.net hasn't moved into the stock market, but are quick to recognise the achievements of team GB as the investment of Sport UK begins to pay dividends in boxing.
Danny Price has taken the gold medal in the Beijing Good Luck tournament - a test event at the Olympic boxing stadium (17th-22nd Nov). The Scarborough ABC boxer's American opponent was unable to box due to an injury, but Danny's skills were never in doubt this week and coach Terry Edwards had expected him to emerge victorious from the final.
The GB squad return home tomorrow after an extremely busy and successful year. The four boxers taken to Beijing return with one gold (Danny Price), one bronze (Paul Butler 51kg) and valuable experience for up and coming boxers Anthony Ogogo 69kg and Thomas Stalker 57kg.
The trip also presented an excellent opportunity for Terry Edwards and staff to recce the Beijing 2008 Olympic boxing venue in action. Danny and Thomas will be back in action on the 30th November v USA at the Mecca of boxing York Hall, Bethnal Green, London (see www.abae.co.uk for more details). The GB squad will then take a well earned break before resuming the Olympic qualification campaign in earnest in 2008.
The squad has already qualified boxers at four (54kg Joe Murray, 60kg Frankie Gavin, 64kg Brad Saunders and 81kg Tony Jeffries) of the eleven Olympic weight categories but will look to improve on this total at the two remaining European zone Olympic qualifiers:
