JJ gets tenth win at the legendary York Hall

by Kevin Taylor
Dec 4th 2007
On Saturday once again the World Sports Organisation packed out the legendary York Hall in Bethnal Green deep in the heart of London's East End and once more the show was filled with good match-ups from top to bottom of the card.

Top of the bill saw JJ Ojuederie take on the erratic hard punching Birmingham based Zimbabwean Hastings Rasani over six rounds. Rasani replaced Nick Okoth as a late notice substitute.

Ojuederie had half-brother Ojay Abrahams in his corner, OJ is stuck on 99 fights, and also brother and fellow pro Daley was also there to support his older brother.

Ojuederie the current International Masters champion has pulled round a career that looked to be going nowhere after three fights and three loses and now boasts a respectable record of 9-3-1 having gone unbeaten in his last ten fights.

Rasani, with Nobby Nobbs in his corner, was always looking for the big shot, 16 of his 20 wins have come by way of stoppage, but he was outworked in most rounds by the more skilful Ojuederie who got the decision 59-56 on referee Ian John-Lewis' card.

Love it or hate it, women's boxing seems to have a place in the fight game in Britain and there was a very good rematch between Shanee Martin and Juliette Winter over six two's which ended controversially in a draw, although I had Winter winning by five rounds to one as she stuck to her game plan and time and time landed good shots.

With former British and European Title challenger Clifton Mitchell aka Paddy Reilly, in her corner Winter seems to be improving all of the time and is certainly one fit girl and there was no namby-pamby punching in this one, Martin once again ended up with a cut and a blooded nose and Winter also had damage to her nose.

For the purists who think it's all just glamour and no substance they should have been watching this fight as both girls showed that they are as technically gifted as many of their male contemporaries. Winter in particular landed some crushing blows onto Martin, who is trained by former British light-welterweight champion Jason Rowland.

Referee Bob Williams decision to raise both hands at the end of the fight had Martin's Bubble blowing songsters, she comes into the ring in a trademark claret and blue dressing gown as a supporter of West Ham to the West Ham theme tune, raising the roof while the aforementioned Mitchell may well be hauled before the BBBoC for his verbal attack on referee Williams.

Mitchell certainly had a point the only round I gave Martin was the last, she was outboxed by Winter from the first bell and Winter certainly seems to have her number, although most wouldn't disagree with a third contest between the pair.

Much touted Ben Murphy lost his unbeaten record against debutant Michael Frontin. A quick search revealed that this was in fact former amateur star Giovanni Frontin who gained a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth games, losing to Britain's Frankie Gavin in the final.

Mauritian Frontin put down the muscular Murphy in the third round of a scheduled four rounder with a peach of a right uppercut and it was the uppercut that Frontin landed time and time again on the unprotected chin of the Hove billed Murphy who trains in Birmingham.

The knockdown proved to be the difference between the pair as Frontin's arm was lifted by referee Williams for a 39-38 points victory.

Ashley 'Treasure' Theophane used to come to the ring in an executioners mask, this time for what was billed as his last fight in the UK despite him being number one contender for the British light-welterweight title he donned pink.

The heavily tattooed Theophane needed less than two minutes to dispose of the much defeated Rocky Muscus, whose record moved to 1-29. A right hand out of nowhere had the Greek born Muscus on Bambi legs before he went down and although he was up quickly referee Ian John-Lewis had seen enough and waved the fight off.

Greg Barton returned to the ring after a one-sided beating from Commonwealth champion Darren Barker last time out and seemed lucky to pick up a win over the much travelled Ernie Smith.

Smith, sporting a new blonde hairstyle, seemed to make Barton miss with most of his shots and landed some big rights throughout the fight and even found time to look at an imaginary watch as he waited for Barton to throw a punch. Referee Williams scored it 40-37 to Barton while I had the same score but the other way round as Barton moves to 3-4 while Smith notches up loss 125 in a 144 bout career.

Rocky Dean seemed to be four rounds up against Walsall's Steve Gethin before referee Ian John-Lewis intervened in the fifth of a scheduled six rounder when he decided that Gethin's cut was too bad for him to continue.

Gethin without normal trainer Errol Johnson was cut early in the first round and his corner didn't seem to have anything apart from a towel to control the cut. And the cut just kept reopening every round. Dean had a point taken off of him in the fifth round after a low blow.

Dean will be hoping to get back into at least the Southern Area title mix in 2008 after another good performance saw his record move to 13-9-2. The pair had drawn back in February 2003 over four rounds.

Well supported Hammersmith heavy Ali Adams certainly loves himself and was giving it large before the contest against Radcliffe Green, but the thirty-four year old Jamaican based in Balham upset the odds with a devastating knockout in the last round.

Having been stopped in his last four fights Green who must have given away about nine inches to Ali was always looking for the big punch and he put Adams down in the second with a left hook and overhand right and then in the fourth he landed flush with a left and right hook that put Adams through the ropes and onto a table, straight away the count was dispensed with as the medics rushed to his aid and happily Adams was soon up on his feet.

Green moves to 5-20-1 with four of his victories coming early. The stoppage was timed at just 19 seconds of the fourth round.

In a fight billed as the "Battle of Hampshire" Jay Morris had too much for Danny Goode, and Goode suffered his first defeat in thirteen fights. Goode just couldn't get to grips with Morris and seemed content to spoil, holding Morris time and time again to fall to a 39-37 points loss. Morris moves to 7-6-1.

Richard Horton moved to 5-1 with a good points win over Staines based Pole Mikhail Bamballra who moved to 1-11-1. Referee Williams scoring it 39-37.

WSO promote again on the 14th December this time at the K2 centre in Crawley with local boy Ross Minter topping the bill and if there's half the entertainment of this one it will be a good show to be at.
