BBN's Young Boxer of the Year for 2007, John Fewkes, has revealed that he should find out later this week if his scheduled clash against John Murray will be for the WBC Youth title as well as the English strap.
The pair are mandated to fight for the English title and Murray also holds the WBC Youth crown. The WBC are hosting a convention on January 8th in Mexico and promoter of Sheffield man Fewkes, Frank Maloney, will be in attendance.
"He's going over there to see if they'll agree to make the fight also for Murray's WBC Youth title and I should find out on the 8th or shortly after," said the lightweight who went through 2007 undefeated with points wins against now Commonwealth welter champion Craig Watson, Tontcho Tontchev and Gary Reid.
As for winning his BBN Award, Fewkes was particularly pleased to have got one over Manchester's Murray as he only pipped him by one vote.
"Great to beat Murray - he'd better get used to that! I'm really pleased to have won this award, it's brilliant. Thanks to all the writers who voted for me. It's a real honour and particularly pleasing to win something that's voted for people who know what they are talking about!"
If the Murray fight is not until April, Fewkes might keep away the ring rust with a bout on his trainer Glyn Rhodes' Sheffield card on February 15th.
