Cuban rebel set for Irish Career by Kevin Taylor Jan 10th 2008

Cuban sensation Mike "El Rebellio" Perez touches down at Cork Airport for the first time at 10.30 tomorrow morning (Friday 11th) to begin preparations for his professional boxing career. The power punching heavyweight, pictured below is a former World Amateur Champion and was hotly tipped in Cuba to win a Gold medal at this years Beijing Olympics. Perez, who recently turned twenty-two, has been one of Cuba's finest amateurs in recent years engaging in a long standing rivalry with the legendary Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz. The hard hitting southpaw has made the decision to turn professional with Cork based Nowhere to Hyde Promotions and he plans to bring the World Heavyweight title back to the Rebel County. Gary Hyde head of Nowhere to Hyde Promotions today said "Perez will make Cork city his adopted hometown and represent it with pride as a true rebel. I believe he has the potential to go all the way and become a heavyweight great. The first step in that process is at 10.30 tomorrow when Perez touches own on Irish soil where he will no doubt receive a warm Cork welcome. Up the Rebel!"
