Promoter Brian Peters has circulated an exciting press release in anticipation of what he describes as “one of the most exciting matchups ever to take place in an Irish ring”.
It reads: "Brian Peters Promotions will hold a press conference in Dublin at 1pm tomorrow (Thursday 14th February) to announce details of one of the most exciting matchups to ever take place in an Irish ring with one of our rising boxing talents facing the fight of his life against one of boxing's most established names.
"Details of the undercard will also be confirmed including a highly anticipated Irish title rematch and the next professional outing for Cuban heavyweight sensation Mike "The Rebel" Perez."
Intriguing.
Recent reports suggest that promising light-heavyweight Alo Kelly may have to retire after suffering a damaged retina. The Belfast based, County Westmeath fighter only turned pro last year and won five bouts with one draw. This included a stoppage win as the last bout of the evening following the John Duddy-Howard Eastman fight.
Veteran Bantamweight Colin Moffett is looking to round off his eleven-year career with a shot at the British title, one division south at super-flyweight. Moffett has campaigned at that weight before and reckons shedding the excess will prove no problem. Added intrigue to the fight comes in the fact that Colin beat current British champion Chris Edwards in 2004, but the Stoke champion is a much improved fighter since then. Moffett is coming off the back of a career best win over Eugene Heagney in Dublin (rematch) for the Irish title at bantamweight and talk had been of a rubber match between the pair.
Trainer John Breen has revealed that it's a British title shot Moffett craves most and is eager to open discussion with Frank Maloney about the prospect. Breen told the Irish News “Colin believes he can come down from bantam to make the championship weight if something can be agreed."
John Duddy reaffirmed his unmistakeable popularity both sides of the Atlantic last night by attending the 'Irish-American Heritage Night' in Yonkers, New York. Admission was free with traditional Irish food and entertainment on hand prior to Duddy making a speech. The unbeaten Derryman meets unheralded Walid Smichet on 23rd February in Madison Square Garden.
Keep an eye out for an interview with County Mayo Cruiserweight hope Michael “The Storm” Sweeney, coming soon.
