Topping last Friday's bill at the Roker Hotel, Seaburn, Paul ‘The Mackem' Holborn - returning for his first fight in over a year - shook off any ring rust and chalked up a 59-57 against East Ham's Johnny Greaves.
Sunderland lightweight Holborn (9st 10¼lbs) was happy to work behind a fast jab against his fellow southpaw and landed some strong straight lefts in a fight which at times was scrappy. Greaves (10st 2½lbs) never stopped trying and got through with a good left of his own in the fourth against a tight Holborn defence.
However, Holborn's overall aggression, relentless endeavour and work rate ensured he cemented the win – particularly in the last when he flurried his man with shots when he was backed onto the ropes. Holborn improves to 6-1-1 whilst Greaves falls to 0-10. I predict his winless streak will end some time soon.
Crowd pleasing Sunderland heavyweight Danny ‘Boy' Hughes ensured he stayed unbeaten with a 59-56 points verdict against Pudsey's Lee Mountford. It was a composed display from Hughes (19st 2½lbs) who from the off utilised his jab to full effect. Mountford (16st 8lbs) tried with jabs of his own and overhand rights but Hughes worked the body and head of his foe to good effect, also landing flush with a solid looking right uppercut with 10 seconds of the fight remaining which had Mountford hanging on. Hughes improves to 2-0-1 whilst Mountford falls to 4-20-3.
Newcastle light-welterweight George ‘Razor' Watson was made to work all the way by Leonard Lothian (10st 4lbs) to earn his 58-57 victory. The man from Sheffield took the opener, regularly finding success with jabs to the body of Watson (9st 12½lbs).
The rangy Watson started slowly but certainly got better, nearly sending his man to the canvas in round three with straight right hand which landed on the button of Lothian. From the way both men came out for the last round they must have sensed it was close but it was Watson's desire that shone through with sheer volume of shots that ensured he took the session and a well earned win. Watson improves to 4-1, Lothian drops to 6-5-2.
