According to trainer Dave Coldwell, watching Kevin McIntyre defeat Kevin Anderson did not lead to his boxer Kell Brook ‘losing much sleep'.
Brook is the mandatory challenger for the British welterweight title and his trainer says his fighter is relishing the prospect of fighting the Scotsman, who recorded a unanimous points win over Anderson.
Coldwell said: “I would give McIntrye 7 out of 10 for the performance. He did a good job but too be honest I was expecting much more from Anderson. He looked shot and short of ideas.
“I expect a much better McIntyre for the Brook fight and I will be preparing my man for a hard battle. However I expect Kell to win. I believe his extra strength and power will lead to a late stoppage. It will not be easy and we fully respect the current champion. But Kell is relishing at the prospect of being in a meaningful fight with a genuine fighter.”
Two judges gave McIntyre the fight by five points (117-112) while the third could only separate the pair by one (115-114). Whilst being mobbed by his ecstatic supporters the 29-year-old spoke about his plans for the future.
He said: “Kell Brook is the mandatory fight and that will be exciting for the fans. No doubt they will get value for money. I have not seen much of him apart from a few clips on YouTube. He looks flash with an awkward style but I'm not giving this belt up so soon.
“I proved that my first victory over Anderson was no fluke. He can comeback. All he has to do is look at my predicament. He is only 24 but I think he was put under pressure before the fight with people telling him if he lost he would be finished.”
Tommy Gilmour who staged the McIntyre-Anderson contest in conjunction with Matchroom is confident of securing home advantage for the current champion.
Mr Gilmour added: “Whether it be in Paisley [McIntyre's hometown] or Glasgow it doesn't really matter. I will always back a Scottish fighter. The Board will put the fight to purse bids in the next couple of weeks and we will have to wait and see what happens. Barry [Hearn] and I have a commitment to boxing in Scotland and rest assured we will be trying our hardest to win the bid.”
