Hough contemplates retirement by Daniel Mole Mar 7th 2008

Following his failed title attempt, Walsall fighter Matty Hough has admitted that he may retire from boxing. Birmingham's Max Maxwell stopped the 31 year-old at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall as he attempted to lift the vacant Midland Area Middleweight Title last Thursday, 28th February. After hitting the canvas in the opening two rounds, referee Terry O'Connor brought Hough's night to an end after one minute, 46 seconds of the third round. It was a disappointing end to what Hough had hoped would be the crowning moment of a boxing career that started 22 years ago. "I've been boxing since I was nine and really wanted the title," he said. " Boxing is burning me out, so I'm thinking about retiring. "To get down to the weight I had to lose a pound and a half the day before the fight and maybe the affected me. I wasn't switched on. I felt weird. I've boxed bigger, stronger and I've been hit harder in the gym but it wasn't my night. "I'm going to live in Majorca. But I'll be gutted all my life having got this far and not been switched on on the night of the title fight."
