Despite Junior Witter's recent challenge to undefeated pound-for-pound pup Floyd Mayweather, it is worth noting that the pair are unlikely to square off any time soon.
I'm one of the biggest Witter fans out there, but let's be honest, when was the last time a European champion got a shot at one of the best p4p fighters on the planet? Beating Salvatore Battaglia does not warrant a shot at 'Pretty Boy', folks. And that's no knock on the tough Italian – it's just business.
Mayweather accepting Witter's challenge would mean he acknowledges him, and agrees that he deserves a shot. This would be scoffed at by most US fight fans, who slate Junior for his poor performance against Zab Judah in 2000. Unfair yes, but true. Mayweather will not jeopardise his carefully manufactured image.
Floyd is on a pedestal right now, and he wants to improve on his ranking, pound-for-pound. Many experts, including myself, rate middleweight maestro Bernard Hopkins ahead of Floyd in the mythical stakes, and beating a Junior Witter would not change this. Many within Floyd's camp may also see a potential Witter fight as pointless. After all, he lost to the only world champion he'd faced, and by an embarrassing decision.
Sorry folks, but this fight won't happen. I wish it would, because Witter would give even Floyd a run for his money...but forget it.
