Prime Minister Brown drops Joe Calzaghe...

by Ian McNeilly
Apr 21st 2008

...a line.

Prime Minister and fight fan Gordon Brown, who recently met some of Team GB's Beijing Olympic qualifiers, will write to Joe Calzaghe this week to congratulate the Welshman on his defeat of Bernard Hopkins.

It is not known if Mr Brown stayed up late to watch Calzaghe come back from a first-round knockdown to win a curiously contested split points decision but the politician is keen to celebrate his fellow Celt's achievements.

Calzaghe received an MBE in 2003 and perhaps the praise from Number Ten could be an indication that another gong could be in the offing for the Newbridge man.

Mr Brown might have a chance to go and see the new Ring Magazine light-heavyweight champion live if the latest rumours are true - it is said that Calzaghe's next fight will be on November 15th at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium against faded great Roy Jones Jr.
