Promoters stage show to help war wounded

by British Boxing
May 16th 2008

WSO stage a six fight show dinner at the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsbury tonight in aid of the 'Help for Heroes' war wounded charity.

In the main event, Walthamstow light heavyweight JJ Ojuederie takes a step nearer toward a British title shot in this difficult but crucial test against the reigning Southern Area champion Andrew Lowe.

A turning point in Ojuederie's career came with an excellent stoppage win over then much vaunted Albanian prospect Eder Kurti at the Elephant & Castle in 2005. Wins over house fighters Lardy Price, Carl Wright and the dangerous John Anthony have been mixed in with victories against opponents such as Simeon Cover, Tony Booth, Ayitey Powers and Hastings Rasani.

Pitched as the opponent more often than not, JJ has put together a roll of ten consecutive unbeaten contests in his pro career. Hackney based Lowe is a technically sound boxer who challenged for the British title several years ago.

The Galleon Suite at the Royal National has hosted some great fights in the past involving the likes of Lester Jacobs, Cornelius Carr, Ensley Bingham, Adrian Dodson and Nicky Cook. Perhaps the finest fight this venue has staged was Ensley Bingham's spectacular ninth round knockout of Delroy Leslie ten years ago for the British light middleweight title live on BBC1.

It is here also that Lester Jacobs promoted many of his own shows as a fighter. Lester retired undefeated as a professional.

On the undercard, Camberley's Matthew Barney will do battle with Ayittey Powers in a repeat six-threes. Barney, number two in the current ratings at light heavyweight will use this bout as a stepping stone for a potential shot at the winner of Dean Francis and Tony Oakey.

The undercard sees the return of two mercurial Haringey based boxers - Michael Grant who has been out of action for over a year with a shoulder injury, and Turk Gokhan Kazaz. Both boxers were decent amateurs. Grant is matched against Hillingdon's Alby Hunt and Kazaz against Sherman Alleyne.

Sydenham's Leon Senior will box four rounds against a selected opponent. Leon is trained by former British champion Ali Forbes. Pro debut heavyweight, Eltham's Garth Hearns (also trained by Ali Forbes) and Hammersmith's Ali Adams round off the card.
