'Amazing' Alex Arthur notched up another impressive comeback win, and called for a rematch with Mancunian rival Michael Gomez, last night.
Arthur, in only his second outing since the loss to Gomez in October last year, showed a cool head and previously unseen pinpoint precision, to outfox and outgun durable Eric Odumase, in Edinburgh.
Early on though, the bout looked to be replica of Arthur's sham one round win over Michael Kizza. The Edinburgh man dropped his opponent with a decent right hand, and the usually tough Ghanian faltered. However, his true heart was shown, as he picked himself up and came roaring back.
Arthur rode out a few brief storms - or rather showers, to take the bout in six. Odumasi made a lot of moves, notably coming forward and trying to ruffle Arthurs feathers, but he was clearly on a higher level. Instead of getting drawn into a mini-war, he showcased an improved defence and chin. Exactly the attributes needed for him to avenge that mauling he suffered last year.
Afterwards, Arthur wasted no time in throwing down a challenge to the current WBU super-featherweight champ. "The Gomez loss was the kick up the backside I needed and now I'm showing what I can really do," he said. "A rematch is what I want and what the whole of Britain wants."
He's not wrong there.
Arthur also praised his conqueror, stating that Gomez was "a great champion."
Let's hope Gomez considers a rematch, instead of fighting unheard of journeymen for his paper title.
