Lowe risks Area title chance on Saturday

by Kev Parker
May 30th 2008

Carl Greaves promotes a six-fight card at Newark's Grove Leisure Centre tomorrow night (Saturday).

Originally, Newark's Andrew Lowe was to be headlining it for the British Masters welterweight title against Karl Chiverton, however, as has been a common occurence in this month of May for promotors at every level, the fight has fallen through several times.

Every cloud has a silver lining though, if Lowe can win this fight then Greaves has a Midland Area title match on June 20th at the Civic Hall at Wolverhampton set up for him against Telford's Mark Lloyd, who only recently lost to Nottingham's Adnan Amar for the English title.

Greaves has had his fair share of headaches this month like a lot of other promotors across the country and world.

"It's always a promotors nightmare when fighters pull out and being the matchmaker as well makes it more differcult. This is what I want to do though so I have to take the rough with the smooth. Great things can be ahead of Andrew, he needs to win this then the next match which is for the Midland Area title.

"This is the fourth opponent for Andrew, first Karl pulled out with a bad back, then we had a rubber match set up with Johnny Musgrave but he slipped a disc. The third sub was Chris Long but he didn't have enough recovery time from his last ten-rounder so in came Brophy.

"Andrew's looking sharp and he needs this win, all the lads are looking great, very sharp down here and I'm pleased with how they are all coming on."

Lowe said, "I was really looking forward to fighting Karl, I was very confident for the fight and it would have been a good local derby. Hopefully we can meet in the future, I'd like to fight him down the line.

"I've been sparring Amir (Unsworth - gym mate), he's a good lad, nice and sharp and also Kev Hammond a lot. I've been doing a lot of rounds with Kev, we always have a really good spar. There's a few of the heavier lads I've been going in with too."

On the card will be Eddie O'Rouke from Newark and Ben Lawler from Skegness making their debuts, plus the return of the popular undefeated Sleaford fighter Amir Unsworth and Newarker Jamie Norkett looking to add more wins to their records.

Also on the card is a regular sparring partner of Lowe's and former amateur opponent Kevin Hammond appearing in a light-middleweight contest. Amir Unsworth is fighting the experienced Baz Carey, a man who has fought Michael Gomez and Amir Khan, neither of these fighters, who both possess a good dig, could stop Baz so it shows that Carey has a very good chin and has mixed in the top company.

Unsworth said, "I'm just looking for the win, I know Baz has a great chin. It would be nice to get the stoppage but I'm just looking to get the win. Training's gone much better this time, I've had more leave from Iraq this time so I've had a few more weeks to prepare and had alot more sparring so I'm ready."

Ben Lawler from Skegness boxed for the Army as an amateur and from around 23 fights racked up 17 wins. He's making his debut after signing with Carl and shows his dedication to the sport by travelling to Cambridge for work everyday, then driving over to Newark to train in the evenings. He squares off at lightweight against Sid Razak.

"I like to work behind the jab and counter punch," observed Lawler. "Carl has me doing different things every session and I know he'll look after me and point my career in the right direction so I'm hoping the hard work is going to pay off, I had heard great things about Carl and felt it was right to sign with him to start my professional career."

Also making his debut in the super-featherweight division is local fighter Eddie O'Rouke, currently the youngest pro in Britain, against Salfords Senol Dervis.

The two remaining contests will be Jamie Norkett, hoping to add another victory in front of his home crowd, against Mark Nielson of Lancashire at light heavyweight and Lincoln light middleweight prospect Kevin Hammond (2-0) facing off against Leicester's Lester Walsh (1-1).

Tickets are still available through all of the fighters appearing on the bill and can also be obtained through Carl Greaves Promotions on 07709 451337.
