Black Country boxing bubbling

by Daniel Mole
Jun 10th 2008

Black Country boxing has received a ringing endorsement from Rob Kenney. And the Wolverhampton-born light-middleweight should know with four of his opening seven fights taking place at the area's top boxing venue – the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

The 30-year-old will be back at the Civic Hall on Friday, 20th June when he takes on Leeds' Chris Thompson on the undercard Mark Lloyd and Andrew Lowe's Midland Area Title fight.

Three other Wolverhampton fighters will also be in action with Kenney's cousin Russell Colley, Steve Saville and women's prospect Lyndsey Scragg all set to feature alongside the likes of and Dudley's Jamie Ball.

“There are a lot of good boxers coming through from the Black Country,” said Kenney. “Boxing is on the up in the area and one of the main reasons is the Civic Hall and 1st Team Promotions.

“I used to watch a lot of fights there as a kid but then it seemed to stop for quite a while. Boxing's back there now and it's getting more and more popular.”

Kenney (6-0-1) will be looking to build on his unbeaten professional start when he takes on Thompson, who has lost both of his opening two fights. Although not underestimating his opponent, Kenney has set his sights on recording another victory in an effort to set up a Midland Area Title fight within the next 12 months.

“I don't know too much about Thompson but I'll give him the same level of respect that I give all my opponents”, he added.

“I'm undefeated so far and that's the way I want it to stay.

“After Thompson, I'll get my head down and go again because I want a Midlands Area Title of my own by this time next year.

“I'm pleased with how things have gone but I know that there is more to come from me. I want to do the Black Country proud.”

Tickets for the show are available from the Wolverhampton Civic Hall Box Office on 0870 320 7000 or from 1st Team Promotions' PJ Rowson on 07976 283 157.
