After trial visits to several top coaches, Amir Khan has chosen a relatively unknown Cuban to be his next trainer.
Khan's local paper, the Bolton News, revealed that Jorge Rubio Agramonte is the man who will be taking over from Dean Powell, who stood in for the Michael Gomez fight after Khan parted company with Oliver Harrison.
In an ironic twist, perhaps the best known boxer to have come under Agramonte's stewardship is Mario Kindelan - the man who defeated a young Khan to take gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Apparently, Agramonte was also in the corner for David Haye in his win over Enzo Maccarinelli but such was the brevity of that contest his presence wasn't really noted.
“This is Amir's choice and nobody else's,” explained Khan's father, Shah, to the Bolton News.
“When we went to America he trained with both Mayweathers, McGirt, and he's worked with Roach before, but it was Jorge who he was most impressed with.
“They worked together on technique and he liked Amir's style and, most importantly, Amir liked his. He may not be the most famous name but that's not what we wanted. We wanted someone who can improve Amir and, when he wins a world title, everyone will know who Jorge is then.”
Agramonte came to Britain last week and is already helping Commonwealth lightweight champion Khan prepare for his September 6th showdown against an opponent yet to be named. It is hoped that the name of the opponent will be made public on Wednesday.
Trainer of British lightweight champion John Murray, Joe Gallagher, told BBN last week that he had offered Khan a fight with his charge three times but to no avail.
