BBN Exclusive - Dunstan returns in Sheffield

by Kevin Taylor
Sep 14th 2008
Former British and European champion Terry Dunstan will return to the ring next month in Sheffield after an absence of nearly nine years.

Cruiserweight Dunstan, who is trained by Howard Rainey in Sheffield, will return on the 10th October on a Glyn Rhodes promoted show in Sheffield.

Dunstan, who will be forty eighteen days after his comeback fight, won the European title when he knocked out Alexander Gurov in less than twenty seconds back in February 1998 with a cracking right hook at the Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre in London.

He won the British title in only his ninth fight defeating the former WBC light-heavyweight champion Dennis Andries at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, he then defended his title twice once against Andries and then John 'Buster' Keaton who lasted just 44 seconds at the York Hall in May 1996.

After winning the European title, Dunstan fought Imamu Mayfield for the IBF World cruiserweight title being stopped in the penultimate round of their twelve rounder at the KC Arena in Hull.

His last fight was against Carl Thompson, in December 1999, when he tried to regain his British title, but with a minute left of a gruelling contest both men landed simultaneous right hands and both went crashing to the canvas. Thompson managed to haul himself back up whilst Dunstan was counted out.

Dunstan was jailed for eight-and-a-half years in December 2000 after admitting charges of false imprisonment, blackmail and aggravated burglary.

At the time he told the court: "There is nothing I can say apart from I am very sorry.

"I know it will not help them but I would like to say sorry to the victims, their families and colleagues and for wasting the court's time."

Dunstan has done his time, and although he doesn't want to hide from the past he wants to put it behind him and to get on with his boxing career after regaining his licence, starting with his first fight on the 10th which will 22nd professional fight at the moment his record stands at 19 wins, 12 by stoppage, with just the two losses.

Moribund ...
Sep 14th 2008, 16:04:29 by zzutak
Thanks for confirmation Kev, though it is a suprise

Interesting to see what progress Dunstan makes, even if he is only 60% - & 70% of what he was he can make an impression in the current moribund Cruiser division

Haye has gone Heavy, Maccarinelli will never be the same again I fear, Hobson has retired ... who's left ?

No disrespect but the fact we have seen Keaton v Swaby and soon Norton v Steeds as title fights speaks volumes of how dire the division is

Time will tell ..

Unlikely

Is this confirmed, be suprised if it's correct ?

I recall Roy Skeldon being knocked back for his license a few years back due to:

A) His age (like Dunstan he was nearing 40)

B) His inactivity (Skeldon had only been out two years!)

May be a touch speculative I fear

Kev - I've been assured he has his licence back and will fight on the 10th, he's been sparring a lot with Martin Rogan.
