Haye’s European Hunting-ground

by Will Hale
Dec 17th 2005

David Haye sensationally ripped the European cruiserweight title from world-class Alexander Gurov in just forty-five seconds last night (December 16) at the Bracknell Sports centre.

The adage “You don't get paid overtime in this business” sounded as clear as a Christmas bell as the defending Ukrainian champion was left with his ears ringing after only thirty five seconds before he failed to beat referee Guido Cavalleri's count.

During the introductions, Haye prowled the ring and fixed Gurov with a vicious stare. It was all business. Gurov's expression seemed to be more “here-we-go-again” then “I've-seen-it-all-before” as he waited stationary for the start of the fight.

In the thirty-five seconds before the knockout punch, Gurov tried to take the centre of the ring and pressure Haye. He didn't land anything of consequence nor detract Haye from looking for his trademark early finish.

The right hand that finished the fight had the brutal grace that typifies elite fighters. Haye moved to his right and set the shot up with a sharp range-finding left. At this point there was a perfect straight line along Haye's left arm and through his shoulders to the brewing devastation in his right. The finishing punch was extended without being overstretched. For his height, David has an extremely long 80' reach and the power seemed to flow effectively and efficiently through his arm into Gurov's head.

David didn't lose any of his posture as he forcefully stepped behind the punch. It was delivered with blinding speed, perfect timing and fearful intent. Gurov bravely tried to haul himself up, to no avail.

It was a tremendous win for the Brixton man. The next year will be an intriguing time in the career of David Haye. At 25, he has plenty of time to make a couple of defences of the European title before stepping up to fight the division's top names.

However, it will be a difficult assignment to stretch him into the later rounds at European level. Top contender for his title is recent WBO title-challenger Vincenzio Cantatore. The Italian pushed Nelson to the wire a few weeks ago and it would be an interesting contest for the form books. And there is also Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, the 34-1 (26) Polish EU champ. Sadly, Sport's Network's Johnny Nelson and Enzo Maccarinelli are the wrong side of the promotional divide for Fight Academy's Haye.

Other alternatives include a third try for Hobson, a rematch with Thompson or starting on some lesser world-ranked names like an Orlin Norris. But with the David Haye Express again on full steam ahead, let's hope France's Jean-Marc Mormeck is in distant view on the horizon.
