First Team's Davies after British in 2008

by Tom Podmore
Nov 30th 2007

Telford's Tristan Davies may be bidding to win the British Masters ten-stone title on First Team's three-fight card at the Oakengates Theatre tomorrow night (Saturday, December 1), but wants Colin Lynes' British title in 2008.

Undefeated Davies, 11-0 (0), meets slippery Ingle-trained Tony Montana for the vacant British Masters light-welterweight strap in his hometown and knows it would be foolish to look past the Sheffield-based Kosovan.

But the tall Shropshire stylist, a former amateur international, is desperate to procure the Lonsdale belt in the coming year.

The 29-year-old has fond memories of the Oakengates Theatre, winning the vacant Midland Area lightweight title against Wolverhampton puncher Carl Allen 13 months ago. He is now eager to add a second title belt to his cabinet at a second weight.

"Boxing at home always gives you a little bit more of a buzz and I'm grateful to First Team for letting me do that," he said. "This will be fifth professional fight in Telford and second crack at a title at the Theatre.

"I'm looking forward to fighting for my second title on Saturday and it's a fight I need to win if I want to continue with my quest towards the British in the next year.

"Montana could turn out to be a very tough fight, so I won't be taking him lightly. But I know I will win and then I can crack on with bigger titles," continued the Errol Johnson-trained father-of-two.

"I want to fight for the British title and that's my target for next year."

Telford's unbeaten Mark Lloyd defends his International Masters middleweight belt against Sunderland's Martin Marshall and will box for the English light-middleweight title in the New Year. Another local hero, Shaun ‘Slasher' Walton, sees action over six-twos.

Tickets are available from Paul (PJ) Rowson on 07976-283157 or Errol Johnson on 07852-268333.
