Arthur-Guzman on after Warren wins purse bid

by Kevin Taylor
Jan 31st 2008
Alex Arthur has got his dream super-fight against Joan Guzman for the WBO super-featherweight title.

Promoter Frank Warren won the purse bids today (Thursday 31 January) held at the WBO head office in Puerto Rico with a bid of $280,000, beating Guzman's promoters Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

A date and venue for the fight will be announced shortly.

Warren today said, "I have done the job of getting Alex the fight on home turf, now it is down to him to do the business in the ring - which I'm sure he will do. It's a big assignment but Alex is a class operator and will be thoroughly prepared on the night."

Edinburgh based Arthur, who holds the Interim title, has been gunning for a showdown against Guzman.

The hammer-fisted Dominican Republican is regarded as one the premier fighters in the 130lb division and Arthur is delighted that the fight will be in Scotland.

Arthur said, "Frank has done a fantastic job winning the purse bids and securing home advantage for me in this mega-fight against Guzman.

"With my pals Enzo and Joe involved in massive fights, it's great to join them with a big fight of my own. I'm really, really, excited by the challenge in front of me. It's a chance to prove what I have always believed - that I belong in world class company and will be world champion.

"It will be a hard task but I'm confident of winning and bringing another world title belt to Great Britain."

200% is not enough!!

An airline pilot doesn't sit on the end of the runway prior to take off with 300 plus passengers on board wondering if his craft will have a multi engine failure at lift off!! Positive thought is the secret backed up with sound training and self belief. It's the same for the boxer.

200% sure

As I recall Ricky Hatton claimed he was 200% sure that he would beat Floyd Mayweather. Now we hear that Alex Arthur is confident of winning and bringing back another world title to Great Britain. Mayweather is arguably the best boxer in the world and Joan Guzman is very nearly as good. How is it their British opponents can feel so confident of victory? Before facing Joe Louis, Tommy Farr did not make any grandiose predictions. Perhaps modern young boxers ought to consider how foolish they might look laying on the canvass, especially after their great and glorious pronouncements.
