Hatton v Lazcano nears confirmation

by David Statham
Mar 12th 2008

As revealed in a world exclusive a full month ago by BBN's Ian McNeilly, Juan Lazcano is almost certain to step into the ring on May 24th to challenge England's favourite champion Ricky Hatton in the former light-welterweight champion's ‘homecoming' fight.

I say 'almost certain' as there is still no official confirmation from Team Hatton and today the boxer's father Ray actually denied it was a done deal - despite Lazcano stating the opposite.

Ray Hatton told the Press Association: "Until you see their signature alongside your signature, it's never done. We're hoping the people concerned are going to sign them. It will probably be about another seven days to confirm it."

However, Lazcano told his local El Paso Times last Thursday: "It's done - I signed the contract today."

If it is to happen, it will be the ‘Hitman's' first contest since returning from his successful three fight American adventure and it will take place in Manchester City Football Club's City of Manchester Stadium on May 24 - the date and venue are confirmed.

Although Hatton lost his unbeaten record whilst on his voyage to the States last year, he achieved his dream of headlining in Las Vegas and also returned to the green green grass of home with a new friend.

Hatton admitted last week that he and welterweight king pin Floyd ‘Money' Mayweather, the man who knocked him out in ten rounds, have become good friends and the American, who has a fight coming up with WWF's Big Show, has said he would love to be at the Mancunian's next fight.

All the pre-fight banter that proceeded the December 8th clash has been forgotten and the Hitman will no doubt be pleased to see the slick ‘Pretty Boy' supporting him ringside rather than standing opposite him in it.

The May date is also a return to the ring for world ranked, American Lazcano who has won 37 of his 42 contests (1 draw), but hasn't fought since losing to Vivian Harris one year ago.
