No ticket for Hatton's Man City fight? Try Coventry City, same night!

by Tom Podmore
Apr 23rd 2008

Danny Coyle, James Flinn and Llewelyn Davies hope to provide more entertainment and excitement than world champion Ricky Hatton when they box at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena on May 24.

The popular and exciting Coventry trio box on West Midlands Sporting Club's first professional show on the same night as Manchester's Ricky Hatton defends his IBO and Ring Magazine light-welterweight titles against Juan Lazcano at another football ground, Manchester City's impressive City of Manchester stadium, and are looking to impress.

‘The Hitman's' homecoming fight will be shown as part of the promotion in Coventry, by the way.

Atherstone's crowdpleasing welterweight Danny Coyle, 25, who has won both of his professional outings (both on points) since making his professional bow on Coventry Sporting Club's show at the Leofric Hotel in March and who's coached in Birmingham by world champion trainer Len Woodhall, will get the boxing underway in a six-twos at around 8:30.

Another Woodhall-trained fighter, flashy Coventry southpaw Llewelyn ‘Lewy' Davies, will then make his professional debut over four-threes in the night's second fight. Davies won 14 of 18 amateur contests for Cassidy Triumph ABC, was a finalist in the Welsh ABAs, was made captain for Welsh international contests and is expected to make a splash in the middleweight division.

“I'm going to entertain,” boasted the confident but level-headed prospect. “I want people to remember what I did before and after the fight and not just what I do in the ring. I'm here to put on a show.”

There will then be a small auction, a chance for a photo with Liverpool's John Conteh, the former WBC light-heavyweight monarch and one of Britain's best pound-for-pound fighters, before the Hatton-Lazcano 12-rounder is broadcast on several big screens around the venue at 10pm.

James Flinn, who is pencilled in to make his paid bow in Burton-on-Trent against Kristian Laight eight days earlier (May 16), will then make his second professional appearance. The 25-year-old local light-welterweight, a former Midland ABA champion and ABA semi-finallist for Coventry's Cassidy Triumph ABC, will wrap up the evening's entertainment in a four-threes.

Tickets for the dinner show are available from promoter Les Allen on 07980 313414.
