Ulster/Irish news round up

by Steve Wellings
May 21st 2008

Martin Lindsay recorded arguably the best win of his career thus far when he outpointed Marc Callaghan over eight rounds on Friday 16 May. Featuring on the Colin Lynes-Gianluca Branco undercard in Turin, Italy, Lindsay beat a former British and Commonwealth title challenger. The Belfast featherweight now has commonwealth holder Paul Truscott firmly in his sights.

Andy Lee is looking to rebuild after a shock KO loss at the hands of Brian Vera in America when he headlines a show in his native Limerick on 19 July. John Duddy is looking to return on 28 June in Boston following his close victory over Walid Smichet and recover from the cut he sustained in that bout. Eddie McLaughlin's Irish Ropes outfit have the venue booked.

European champion Rendall Munroe and former world champion Wayne McCullough are reportedly keen on fighting one another.

Jamie Moore V Ciaran Healy is back on the schedule, one week earlier on 5 July at the Tallaght Basketball Centre, Dublin. Billy Walsh, Henry Coyle and Jon O'Brien are also listed on the Tommy Egan promotion. Heavyweight Martin Rogan may also feature, alongside exciting prospect Gary O'Sullivan and two of the Hyland brothers, Paul and Patrick.

The third Hyland, Eddie, is part of a bill in Belfast scheduled for 31 May at the Shorts Social Club. He meets Nikolai Michailov while Scott Belshaw will look to put the disappointment of a first pro defeat behind him as he tops the bill. German based Latvian Edgar Kalnars is the opponent and another Latvian Janis Chernouskis is on the show against rising welterweight prospect Willie Thompson. Ballyclare based Willie will need to be alert, as Chernouskis recently starched Damian Taggart in one round in Letterkenny.

Veteran campaigner Lee Murtagh gets Yassine El Maachi, while the aforementioned Partick Hyland keeps busy versus livewire Robin Deakin. Bantamweight talent Luke Wilton fights Kemal Plavci while Gary Hamilton is awaiting an opponent.

Alan Wilton promotes in association with Belfast Promotions. The night before that event, at the same venue, Eastside ABC host a Belfast select in an amateur attraction. The number for tickets or information on both events is: 07880 926 596

The Irish Boxing Supporters Club meeting is confirmed for the Dockers Club, Belfast at 8pm with special guest Neil Sinclair expected to attend along with his Lonsdale belt. A raffle for a signed glove is included and the entrance fee of £5.00 is payable on the door and all are welcome, with further details available from organiser Cormac Campbell at: editor@irish-boxing.com or cormaccampbell@gmail.com
