A bitterly disappointed Rick Manners called me just now to advise his charge, Carl Johanneson, has been forced to withdraw from a December 11th British super-featherweight title eliminator in Leeds, with previous victim, Andrew Ferrans.
A freak accident was to blame, when Carl, Rick and some members of the camp were out on roadwork last night, “It was a little more slippery than we thought,” Rick told me just now.
“Carl slipped on an icy patch and put his arm out to stop himself as he fell backwards. Initially he seemed okay, but when we put him into light sparring this morning, he was feeling nasty twinges in his back. The upshot is that he will not be able to do anything for a couple of weeks.”
I asked when a reschedule will be likely, and Rick feels, talking into account Christmas and January, it's unlikely we will see Carl in action again until February.
“Carl's really pissed off right now, he been working hard for this and it's a real tough break. We were looking at TV fights next year.”
All being well, that can, and will, still happen. Carl, gunning for a shot at Alex Arthur, had been 4-0 (4) in his 2005 campaign; a two-month setback to a planned big new year is a cruel blow.
