Unlucky break for Millarvie

by Tom Walker
Sep 29th 2006

Scotland's heavyweight boxer Ian Millarvie has suffered a real set back on the eve of his ten fight deal in America. The Hamilton boxer was scheduled to box against Rodney Ray in New York, but a jogging run has ended in disaster with him sustaining a broken ankle.

Millarvie is quoted as saying: "I felt so devastated when I went over on my ankle I could have broken down and wept. If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. It's especially hard to take after a six-week separation from my girlfriend and family. If there had been a fight at the end of the absence from home it wouldn't have been so bad."

"Ian is absolutely devastated," said his manager Tommy Gilmour. "He was out for a final light jog at his training camp when he went over on his right ankle. He has what they call a chip fracture and is on crutches. When we get him home, we will find out exactly how long he will be out, but it's a real setback."

There's many a true word said in jest, and Ian's comment in reference to having no luck if it weren't for “bad luck”, is unfortunately true, as this comes hot on the heels of his having to take time out to recover from a blood disorder earlier in his career. I for one hope that the tide has turned and that Ian Millarvie gets a better 'break' when his professional career resumes in the hopefully not too distant future.
