Gomez comeback express pulls into Wigan

by Terry Dooley
Jun 23rd 2007
Michael Gomez continues on the comeback trail today as Wigan's Robin Park Arena hosts a massive VIP bill.

Gomez stopped Daniel Thorpe in three rounds last time out. Gomez mixed ring-rust with aggression and showed enough of his old self to suggest his comeback road will feature a few twists and turns.

Gomez takes on Youssef Al Hamidi in a fight Michael hopes will let the UK boxing scene know he is ready for a fight against any super-featherweight.

The undercard to the main contest will feature VIP favourites Alex Matvienko, Gary Sykes, Johnny Enigma and Wigan's own Sean Crompton – fighting only a week after his debut.

This show will also feature the professional debut of Jon Kays, who gained a name for himself in the amateur ranks.

The show will showcase the well-schooled Bobby Rimmer fighter Brian Rose who has shown steady improvement in his fights so far. Brian will be looking for win number five.

Brian can box well plus punches correctly with either hand. In his last fight, against Tony Randell, he showed that he could also stand firm and mix it up with shots to the body, most noticeably the left hook to the midsection.

Alex Matvienko will be looking to add to his reputation as an exciting pressing fighter despite telling BBN that he feels his boxing skills are being overlooked. After a week spent honing his boxing technique Alex feels the Wigan crowd, plus travelling support, will se him at his best.

Another fight to watch out for is Johnny Enigma versus Tony Randell. Enigma is not overly complicated in the ring and Randell likes to fight himself so it should result in a decent bout.

Sean Crompton, the former wrestler, is the one many in the crowd will be looking out for. He has barely had time to come down from the buzz of his debut victory over tough journeyman Ernie Smith. Sean will carry plenty of stamina and strength into his bout with Irfan Malik.

VIP bills generally provoke a lot of atmosphere, as well as enthusiasm, amongst the crowd so the day itself will be a good taster for the Wigan fight fans ahead of a show on the sixth of July that will feature Jamie Moore, Martin Power (who takes on Jason Booth for the British Bantamweight title) and Ali Nuumbembe.
