Anderson considers permanent Manchester move by Tom Walker Oct 31st 2007

Scotland's Kevin Anderson, British welterweight champion, is giving serious consideration to moving to Manchester lock, stock and barrel. The Fifer, whose defence of his British title is to be shown live this Friday on Sky, is convinced that the quality of sparring and the guidance of the redoubtable Bob Shannon that he enjoys in Manchester, is the key to further success. The travelling to and from Manchester in three weeks segments has a detrimental effect on his skills being honed in the Openshaw gymnasium, and Anderson believes he can achieve more with Shannon's guidance by being on the doorstep, so to speak. Victory over fellow Scot Kevin McIntyre on Friday, will make the coveted Lonsdale belt his outright property, and from that position he can look towards a match with European champion Jackson Bonsu, the Ghanaian boxing out of Belgium. Anderson is not one to blow his own trumpet, however, the transformation in his career under the tutelage of Bob Shannon is testament to the trainer's ability and a new found self-belief in Anderson's own capabilities. (On a personal note, I'm delighted to see Kevin making such progress from the first time of his travelling to Ulster as a 13 year old in a team I'd put together to match against St Agnes ABC in West Belfast, when he lost a majority decision against a five times All-Ireland champion - with three judges from Belfast!)
