Clinton Woods - I'm a big fan of Calzaghe

by Ian McNeilly
Dec 14th 2007

Despite the war of words in the press between the camps of Clinton Woods and Joe Calzaghe, the IBF light-heavyweight admitted today that he's a big fan of the Welshman - and has been for a long time.

"I'm a big fan of Calzaghe's and always have been," said Woods today, speaking from his Sheffield gym.

Woods had said that Joe was 'scared' of him and Calzaghe's father and trainer Enzo replied, saying: "Scared of Clinton Woods, what a total joke. It would be one of our easiest fights ever against a bloke who must have amnesia; he's been put on the floor three times against nobodies.

"This isn't a playground, you can't just talk your way into a scrap. Woods should go back to school and study economics.

"HBO and any other American broadcaster wouldn't touch Calzaghe versus Woods with a barge-pole, that's the only issue. Clinton needs a reality check. The truth is, he's not even close to Joe's level."

He added: "England versus Wales is only an issue if both fighters have a chance and unless Joe boxes with a blindfold on this would be a total mismatch."

Woods responded: "It does annoy me all the shit that Enzo comes out with but that doesn't stop me being a fan of Joe.

"I'd like to ask him when were the three times I've been on the floor?  I only remember two!

"The thing is, Jeff Lacy was the most over-hyped fighter EVER.  Manfredo was no good either.  If Rico Hoye had been as hyped as Lacy, I'd be seen as the best fighter going.

"I really want the Calzaghe fight but I can't be hanging around waiting for him.  I want to unify.

"In 2008 I'm looking at the other title holders - Chad Dawson, Danny Green and that German kid." (other titlist are Dawson, Stipe Drews - whom Green boxes this weekend, and German-based Magyar Zsolt Erdei - Ed.)

Although disappointed by the route Calzaghe intends to take - a fight with Bernard Hopkins - he understands the motivation behind it.

"It would be a terrible fight, awful.  It's just about money, that's all and I can't blame him."

Deano would be awesome

Dean would be a fantastic opponent for Clinton, and defo has the skills to take the title from him.
If Joe is going to the states, this would be an awesome domestic scrap.
