Teddy Haynes - RIP by Kevin Taylor Jan 8th 2008

BBN are sad to bring you the news of the death of former Midland's Area middleweight champion Teddy Haynes, who passed away on the 28th December aged 71. Teddy was born on 26 July, 1936 the eleventh of fifteen children, both his father and elder brother dabbled in the sport, but Teddy decided to take it seriously and joined the Morris Commercial Cars. He later boxed for the Wolesley Club and also the Army Cadets, where he became the lightweight champion in the 52-53 season. Teddy established himself as a heavy puncher with a string of KO wins. Teddy joined the Royal Engineers when he was 18 and was stationed in Gillingham, Kent, where he boxed for the local club, St Mary's of Chatham. Teddy earned the nickname "Corporal Punishment", which was how Reg Gutteridge described him while he was despatching a victim. In all as an amatuer, Corporal Haynes had 26 fights in a year and a day, including a five month break, in which he lost only two, and he defeated six international boxers along the way. Teddy signed up with Tommy Daly and he had his first professional fight was on the 20th November 1958 in Birmingham, against Stan Perry. He was matched against George Alridge for the Midlands middleweight title in Feb 1960. Teddy took the early rounds, but lack of preparation caught up with him and he took two counts of nine in rounds five and six. He was then retired because of injuries to both eyes. In May 1963, at the Midlands Sport Club, Solihull, Teddy again fought for the Midlands middleweight title, against Wally Swift, and this time it was a different story as Swift was stopped things in the fifth round. Teddy held the title for four years without ever defending it. Teddy decided to quit in early 1965, after losing in the fifth round to ex-Olympic bronze medallist, Wille Fisher, at the age of 29. He had been a professional for seven years. After his boxing career he opened a cafe in Peckham, then a hardware shop in Bermondsey. He also became a trainer at Fisher Athletic FC, before opening a ladies hairdressing saloon with his wife in September, 1966 at the Rye Lane Bowling Centre, before owning a couple of pubs including the Henry Cooper in the Old Kent Road. For the past couple of years Teddy had been in a nursing home due to the onset of Alzheimers and he unfortunately passed away just a couple of days after Christmas. The funeral will be held at the Robin Hood crematorium, Streesbrook Road ( off the main A34 Stratford Rd into B`ham) at Robin Hood Island, Shirley, Birmingham on Monday 14th January at 1.30pm, afterwards all are invited to refreshments at The Scanlon's (Private Club), Spring Road (off Reddings Lane), Tysley, Birmingham B11.

I worked for Teddy Haynes at the Henry Cooper Pub-Disco Nov 7th 2008, 04:27:31 by tony wrightley I was resident DJ for over three years at the Henry Cooper Pub/Disco and had many interactions with Teddy. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I have a few pictures that I took of Teddy there at the Henry Cooper with his group of friends and colleagues and the Pub Manager and doormen. I started off on Thursday nights (Widows & Divorcees night) then onto Fridays then Saturday then at one point all three nights and was well known in South London and the Old Kent Road. I even built a light sign for Teddy which was about 4ft square, illuminated with moving lights which said 'Haynes Funky Disco' on it and we hung it up in his pub. I later spoke to him and he told me about his boxing career. From then Teddy always made time to talk to us & buy a pint for me n my mates. One of the old school blokes was Teddy, shame that he has passed on. Barry.
