New opponent for Amar on Burton bill by Tom Podmore Jan 12th 2008

Nottingham's Adnan Amar will now take on Anthony Guillet in the eight-round chief support on Hennessy Sports and GoldenPalace.net's seven-fight card at Burton's Meadowside Leisure Centre on Friday evening (January 18). The 24-year-old had been pencilled in to defend his Midland Area welterweight title – a belt he won by knocking out durable Darren Gethin in Nottingham last year – but several pullouts left the Ingle-trained switch-hitter without a suitable opponent to defend his title against. Birmingham light-middleweight Terry ‘The Brummie Bulldog' Adams, originally mooted as the challenger, was unable to make the welterweight limit and meant the Ingles had to look further afield. Now Amar will meet his first international opponent, France's Guillet, and will be eager to put in the same measured showing he displayed in his ten-round stoppage win against Walsall's Gethin, who had beaten stablemate Tyan Booth for the vacant belt earlier in 2007, in November. Southpaw Guillet, 22-10 (6) and also 24, has extended former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Kevin Anderson over eight on his previous visit to this country and looks durable, though has been on a bad run as of late and lost four of his previous five outings. He has mounted challenges, albeit unsuccessful ones, for both the French and EU welterweight straps in a six-year paid career that has been compiled mainly in France and Italy. Anthony does, however, hold an eight-round win over Emmanuel Fleury, who Tony Doherty once flattened in two rounds. "It's a bit disappointing not to be defending my title," said Amar, 19-1 (4), who is also looking for a crack at the English belt in the next 12 months," though I'm focussed on the Frenchman and will put in a good showing. "The next 12 months will be good for me." British super-bantamweight champ Esham Pickering tops the bill in a defence of his belt against Pontefract southpaw Sean Hughes, who shockingly outpointed the Newark stylist (a former European champion and world title challenger) in an eight-rounder at the end of last year.
