BBN Exclusive - Munroe to fight for European title in Nottingham by Tom Podmore Jan 17th 2008

The English 122lb champion, Leicester's Rendall Munroe, is to side-step the British super-bantamweight crown and instead challenge for the European belt in the East Midlands in March. Munroe, 13-1 (6), who was originally pencilled in to box for the British title against either Esham Pickering or Sean Hughes (fighting a title rematch in Burton tomorrow) in Barnsley on March 22, will now take on Spanish puncher Kiko Martinez, 17-0 (14), at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre, Nottingham. The date has yet to be confirmed. Martinez, 21, looked deadly when he smashed undefeated Bernard Dunne to a one-round defeat in Dublin in the summer and will start as a big favourite to retain his title against the dangerous 27-year-old former British featherweight title challenger. It's been over four years since the venue in Bilborough held a professional card but promoter Frank Maloney is to return and the bill is likely to include Nottingham's Jason Booth, the Commonwealth bantamweight champ who had many memorable championship nights at the venue. Leicester's Kevin Concepcion, Derby's Scott Haywood, Nottingham duo Rod Anderton and Tyrone Wright, the Midland Area light-heavyweight boss, and Alfreton's Adie Whitmore are all expected to be on a East Midlands-flavoured undercard.
