Walsall FC stars today lent their support to local boxer Matty Hough as he steps up preparations ahead of the first title fight of his professional career.
The Walsall-born fighter, who supports his hometown football club, faces Birmingham-based Max Maxwell for the Midland Area Middleweight title at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Thursday, 28th February.
“We all wish Matty the best of luck,” explained fellow Walsall supporter, Richard Taundry, who is pictured with team-mate Darren Wrack. “It would be great for the town if he could win the title and hopefully he can go on to bigger and better things from there.”
Ironically, Hough's last fight was actually at the Banks's Stadium back in November when he drew with Welshman, Jamie Ambler. Since then, he has been working hard in preparation for a title shot and is delighted to have the backing of his local team.
After seven victories, two defeats and that draw against Ambler, Hough is determined to make sure that the eleventh bout of his career sees him claim a first title.
“I'm in good shape and I'm confident I can win,” he said. “It's great to have the backing of the football club. I used to watch Walsall a lot as a kid and my family are all big supporters.
“Because of work and training I can't get to as many games as I'd like but I always keep an eye on their results. They're doing well this season.
“It would be nice to have a big backing for my first title fight. Hopefully the town will get behind me and people will come along and see the fight. I know I'm going to win.”
