Greaves' latest Newark show this weekend

by Kev Parker
Feb 18th 2008

On Saturday February 23rd Carl Greaves is putting on a five bout card at the Grove Leisure Centre, Newark On Trent featuring three local lads Jamie Norkett, Amir Unsworth and Andrew Lowe.

Also featuring on the bill are Kelly Oliver from Lincoln against Hastings Rasani, Wayne Bloy from Grimsby who contested the English super-flyweight title in his last bout in an exhibition match against the current British champion Esham Pickering and Johnny Greaves against Sergei Rozahmans.

Unsworth, who is a serving soldier, will be hoping to add another win to his undefeated record as he faces the experienced Carl Allen in a match made in the light-welterweight division.

"I've been training hard since I got back from Iraq last month and I'm back out there on the 26th February. Carl Allen can dig a little bit and he's been around so I'm going to get on him early and impose my strength and age on him and get another win."

Norkett, a former cruiserweight British champion as a kickboxer, is fighting in the light-heavyweight division against Dave Pearson.

"I'm just taking one fight at a time and always looking to get the win. I don't mind going in the away corner and I understand the odds are going to be stacked against me sometimes in that respect. I feel like I'm progressing all the time but there is alot more to do and I want to keep going forward. Last time out in Newark I started a little slow but made up for it in the next two rounds as I got the stoppage win. I need to come out showing my intentions from the first bell and hopefully get another inside the distance win.

Training's been going well, I'm on the weight and I'm looking forward to it."

Andrew Lowe is taking part in a return bout against Johnny Musgrove. The pair squared off when they were both making their debuts and Musgrove got the nod on points in the six round bout.

"Training's gone really well and I'm basically on the weight already, I'm only two or three pounds over the contract weight and have been for the last few weeks. I feel really fit and strong, John's lost to a couple of good lads since we last fought but he's got some good wins too. I'm really looking forward to getting in the ring, he's an obstacle that I need to get past. I think the longer distance will suit me more, I like to use my quickness and wear people down. I want to put in a really good performance, everything's gone better this time, the sparring, training, everything."

Greaves keeps a watchful eye over everyone in the gym and had this to say about his upcoming promotion.

"It's been hard work, it's my first open show. Small hall promoting is a lot harder when you don't have the TV behind you. It'll be nice to get Andrew a win and I've got a British Masters title shot lined up for him against Karl Chiverton from Mansfield in the next few months so it's a massive fight for Andrew.

"Amir is a great talent, very good head movement, he's a walk forward fighter, great style to watch. It's been hard for Amir as he's been in Iraq for a few months then he's come back to me with three and a half weeks to go so we've got a lot to cram in.

"Jamie Norkett is fighting another serving soldier, Dave Pearson. Jamie has the ability but it's a bit of a confidence thing with him. I think once he sorts that out he really will shock a few people.

"Ticket sales have been going well, it would be great to sell it out as it's not a big venue. I'm looking forward to getting a win for all my lads and all being well the next show will be in April or May with Andrew fighting for the British Masters welterweight title. That will be in Newark. The atmosphere is great down here, once some of the other lads have passed their medicals I'll have about 14 and be training 10 of them so it's going well."

Carl Greaves can be contacted on 07709 451337 for more information and tickets are still available for the show.
