Lee has another African to contend with.

by Tom Walker
Mar 6th 2008
The scheduled WBU Lightweight title fight is no longer on the posters (as reported on this site a week ago). If we are to see Michael Gomez in the Granite City (and it is to be hoped we do!), it will not be against Lee McAllister. He (Gomez) may yet feature on the undercard in support of the main bout.

The top of the bill on the 29th March will though, be for the WBU light-welterweight (140lb) title fight with the “Assassin” facing another “banger” in the shape of Kpakpo Allotey, a tough wee Ghanaian, with a record of 12 wins (10 k.o's) and 5 losses from 17 outings.

Allotey's slate shows 10 out of his 12 wins to have come by the shorter route, but with the caveat that they were some time ago (he's only had one stoppage in the last 2 years) and most were against opposition which would be hard to gauge. When it comes to boxers in the UK, Allotey has boxed three and they're all Scotsmen. Dave Stewart, Willie Limond and Craig Docherty and the other common denominator is that they've all gone the distance. I was at the Limond and Allotey bout which featured on an Alex Arthur bill in the Kelvin Hall in 2006, Limond had the measure of him during that one, but boxing can always spring surprises when least expected.

The “Aberdeen Assassin” should join them with a victory over the diminutive Ghanaian, and pick up his second “world title” as he'll have height and reach advantage over Allotey, and has more movement to avoid shots than the aforementioned boxers.

I'm sure that neither Lee nor his management will be taking anything for granted on the 29th, but I'd be reasonably confident of his becoming only the second boxer from north of Hadrian's Wall to hold two “world titles” at different weights, so long as he doesn't get tagged with any of the bombs which Allotey is prone to throwing to overcome his lack of reach with the jab.
