Firsts and Lasts with Ojay Abrahams

by Kevin Taylor
Mar 22nd 2008
After a colourful career that has lasted almost seventeen years, Ojay Abrahams will step into the ring for the 100th and probably last time in June.

Here we take a look at the first and lasts of the Watford man's career.

Ok, my first fight in the ring.. umm, it was so long ago, I was 13! John Craig.. I remember being nervous but at the same time I was full of confidence.

First club I trained at was South Oxhey boxing club. It was a little gym and the guy who was training me was 65 years of age, and the first words he said to me was "jab jab bang bang", I will never forget that.

My first trainer was the late Bill Green, God rest his soul. He was very caring and always had a lot of time for me.

Last fight I had as an amateur was with Danny Porter, who I beat in 1989. It was a shock result cos Danny Porter was a highly rated amateur, who later went on to fight for the British title.

My first fight as a pro was on the Eubank v Watson rematch 1991 against Gordon Webster, I won by KO in the 3rd! In front of 40,000 people, it was electric, a dream come true.. The Watford fans were calling my name and I didnt disappoint them..

My first purse was £400!! May not sound like much, but after struggling financially for years, it felt like winning the lottery.

The first title I won was at amateur was Hertfordshire Champion, and the British Masters Champion as a pro! Watfords first professional champion in nearly 50 years!

The first thing I do when I get in the arena, well when I eventually get past security, I go to my changing room and then see the doctor.

The last thing I do before entering the ring I stand on the ring apron and turn and admire the crowd and pose! Whether they are booing me or cheering for me, it doesnt matter, I thrive of the crowd .. It can only be Ojay.. Me Myself & I..

The last boxing show I attended was in December at York Hall where I was in my brother's corner as his trainer! Oh, I forgot to mention that he won, which makes me undefeated as a professional trainer and I have a champ in my camp - Team Me Myself & I...

I hope to see all my fans at my 100th Fight in June.
