Gethin expects tough first defence

by Daniel Mole
Apr 16th 2008

Martin Gethin believes that Leonard Lothian will prove to be a tricky opponent when the pair go head-to-head in Gethin's first defence of the Midland Area lightweight title at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre next Friday, 25th April.

Gethin goes into the bout, which forms part of the undercard of Wayne Elcock's British Title fight against Darren McDermott, as holder and with an undefeated professional record of 13-0-1 (5).

Lothian's record stands at a modest 6-7-2 but 24 year-old Gethin will not be taking him lightly and has recently returned from a training camp in Manchester where he sparred with Joe Murray – younger brother of the undefeated and talented John.

The highly-rated amateur won a bronze medal at the World Amateur championships in Chicago last year and Gethin believes Joe's style is similar to that of Lothian, who trains out of Brendan Ingles' highly-acclaimed gym.

“He's a tricky fighter,” explained Gethin. “He's been known to switch his style from orthodox to southpaw during fights like a lot of the Ingles boys.

“I've been up to Manchester and sparred with John Murray's younger brother, Joe, who fights in a way I'm expecting Lothian to.

“It was a good experience. My stable-mate, Dean Harrison, went in with John and I had a good session with Joe.

“I've been training hard for about seven weeks and am feeling really good. I'm doing four mile runs three or four times a week along with a lot of sprints and sparring.

“I'll give Lothian respect but I will be ready for him.”
