Alex Arthur now a 'world' champion

by Tom Walker
May 16th 2008

Edinburgh's Alex Arthur has been given the full version of the WBO super featherweight title after Joan Guzman formally relinquished the title and moved up to lightweight.

The writing was on the wall over a month ago for the Dominican puncher known as “Little Tyson” when stories of him having trouble making the weight were rife. Whilst agreeing to a defence of the belt in Edinburgh scheduled for the 3rd May, and despite Guzman having boxed in Britain before, he “unfortunately” had a problem getting the necessary visa to come to the UK for the bout.

I personally don't doubt that had he been able to make the weight with any degree of comfort (as he'd suggested) then he'd have been over here in a flash for another lucrative payday. This is especially so since Guzman had indicated that defending against Arthur would have been an easy task.

Frank Warren now has to set to work and get Alex Arthur a suitable opponent for his first defence. The Sports Network chief said: "Britain has lost a few of its world champions over the last few months but we have got one back with Alex now declared as world champion.”

"I believe he will be a long-term world champion.

"I'm working hard at the moment to deliver a new date and challenger for Alex."
