I am Scottish, younger than my teeth but seem to have outlasted my hair and a supporter of East Fife FC so obviously I have no interest in football. East Fife is not a major club, in fact they get an even smaller crowd than a return between Danny Williams and Audley Harrison would draw-marginally.
Of more relevance as a freelance I wrote a column and regular features on overseas boxing for Boxing News for about 40 years, before they decided that the internet made me redundant. I have also written for magazines in Australia, Mexico, Argentina and the USA.
For those 40 years with Boxing News I
was also tasked with doing the first drafts for the World, European and Commonwealth ratings, which would then be reviewed and amended by other members of the editorial team before publication.
Ratings have been a constant throughout my involvement in boxing. I was for many years a member of the WBC Ratings Committee (why do I feel that I would have been better claiming to have been a tax collector for all of those years?) I am still a Technical Advisor to the EBU Ratings Committee and I do ratings for an American monthly “Ring Sport”- oh and I hold the exalted, but largely ceremonial, post of Chairman of the Commonwealth Boxing Council, I only get hit if Simon Block ducks!
I think that Sugar Ray Robinson was the complete fighter but if anyone disagrees then that is their privilege and their opinion is not wrong-just different. I totally refuse to get involved in any discussion over which fighter from which era was the best. That has to be the most futile debate anyone can take part in. Ruben Olivares is my all-time favourite fighter and I was a great admirer of Howard Winstone. That’s me so remember it when you read my stuff.
